CLEAR GLAZE:
HOW TO APPLY AND FIRE TO PORCELAIN, STONEWARE, and EARTHENWARE

Seeley's has a full program of clear glazes, formulated to accommodate application on soft- and high-fired stoneware, porcelain bisque, and low-fire earthenware.

Clear glaze options:
Seeley's G500 gloss, lead free clear low-fire (cone 06)
Seeley's GGL150 gloss, lead free clear high-fire (cone 6)
Seeley's GGL100 satin matt, lead free clear high-fire (cone 6)

LOW-FIRE CLEAR GLAZE, Sparkle Clear Glaze, #G500:
Unique cone 06 clear glaze developed by Seeley's. The uniqueness lies in the fact that it works equally well on porcelain, stoneware and earthenware. This is the answer to the stoneware and porcelain aficionados who wish to apply glaze to mature bisque. Unlike other clear glazes, applied to high-fired bisque, it does not craze under normal conditions.

Application on high-fired porcelain, stoneware or earthenware bisque. Brush on two generous coats to earthenware bisque or mature stoneware or porcelain. Let first coat dry before applying second. Even on mature stoneware or porcelain bisque, the glaze does not smear underglazes or hybrid underglazes, such as Mayco's Stroke & Coat, Duncan's Concepts, or Gare's Fun Strokes, once thoroughly dry.

The low-fire G500 glaze also comes in a dipping version. Dip once or twice in one smooth motion for an even coverage.

Viscosity: 15-20 seconds standard cup. Thin with water as desired.

Fire to cone 06, 1830ºF  (1000ºC)

HIGH-FIRE CLEAR GLAZES:

Galaxy Gloss Clear Glaze, #GGL150:
Application on soft-fired porcelain or stoneware: Start with a soft-fired porcelain (cone 018) or stoneware (cone 06) piece. Rinse the piece after soft-firing and let dry. Apply 3-4 coats of clear glaze with a soft glaze brush, such as Seeley's SBR65, Fan Brush for a rich glossy finish. "Flow" it on, do not press, as you will then not get a rich coverage. Let dry.  Although the glaze dries quickly, make sure the underlying layer of glaze is dry before applying the next. Dry-foot.*

Fire to cone 4-6, the higher the firing, the glossier the glaze.

Cone 6: 2200ºF (1200ºC).

The high-fire clear glaze also comes as a Satin Matt Clear Glaze:                      Galaxy Full Moon, #GGL100.  Application and firing is the same as for the Gloss GGL150 above.

*DRY-FOOTING:

Since stoneware and porcelain pieces are impervious to water, the bottom, or part of the bottom (if there is a ring), can be left without any glaze.  Many stoneware and porcelain pieces have a ring, or "foot" on the bottom. That ring should be left "dry", meaning without glaze. The area inside the ring can be glazed. If there is no ring/foot, the entire bottom must be clear of glaze, or the piece will attach itself to the shelf during firing. If some glaze is present on the part of the bottom that comes into contact with the shelf, simply wipe it off with a moist sponge.
